Senator Nasheed on the Ferguson Commission Report

September 15, 2015

I am encouraged that the members of the Ferguson Commission spent such a considerable amount of time and effort examining these issues. They did a great job compiling this report and I commend their efforts.

There are an abundance of great ideas in this report.  The report is a blueprint, and now the baton passes to my colleagues and me in the General Assembly.  It’s time to start focusing on those ideas that we can realistically accomplish together.

Early childhood education is an idea that everyone can support and I think it is doable.  We also came very close last session to updating the police use of deadly force statute. With that as a priority next session, we can finally bring Missouri law up to the U.S. Supreme Court standard.

I also think it’s time for police body cameras.  Everyone knows that body cams protect police and citizens alike. They will be a vital tool in rebuilding the relationship between police and the public.
